Solid rides from Shakey secure BSB title

Shane Byrne wrapped up the 2008 British Superbike Championship at Silverstone today with 3rd and 2nd place finishes. GSE Racing, who run Byrne’s Airwaves Ducati team, is now the most successful British Superbike team of all time with a total of four British Superbike titles.

On his championship win Byrne said, “What an incredibly day. I really wanted to win the championship for myself and GSE Racing last time out at Croft so I can’t help but feel it’s a little overdue. But we finally got it and that’s the main thing!”

Shane Byrne later confirmed he was leaving British Superbikes to go to WSB. However, he was still refusing to confirm who he would ride for in the 2009 World Superbike championship.

Leon Haslam had been leading a hard-fought first race at Silverstone until he was punted off at the chicane by Tom Sykes. The Rizla Suzuki came in like a missile to T-bone the hapless HM Plant Honda. Sykes found himself under official investigation for the incident after the race. Shane Byrne’s Airwaves Ducati teammate Leon Camier took a convincing victory in race one but missed the podium with 4th in race two.

Following race two Camier commented, “Today has been fantastic,” said Camier after the two races. “I’m so pleased to have won again, and I’m absolutely delighted that Shane secured the championship. No one deserves it more than him. I’m a little disappointed not to have got back on the podium in the second race but I’m really pleased with how I was riding and now can’t wait to get to Brands Hatch.”

Team Manager Colin Wright added “It has been a fantastic season for us. We have won four British Championships in the last 10 years! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to this superb record.”
