Spinal Charity backing Laverty

SUAG is backing Laverty in the WSS championship

Spinal injuries are very common with motorcyclists and racing so I am happy to be supporting SUAG; anything to help people and their families with spinal injuries is a good thing in my book

A North West spinal injuries charity has teamed up with World Supersport title challengers Parkalgar Honda in an attempt to raise £30,000 - and is calling on local businesses to back the scheme.

The Southport based charity Spinal Unit Action Group (SUAG) is the supporting charity to the Regional Spinal Injury Unit based in Southport Hospital that funds holidays, travel expenses, driving lessons, equipment and monthly “nights in” with home cooked meals for patients and relatives.

SUAG also provides specialist care for anyone with a spinal injury disability, including residential and respite care. The home has 12 beds within its property and is the only charity of its type in the UK offering this service to residents and their families. It is funded from donations and now urgently needs £30,000 to improve and maintain the standards of accommodation for residents and guests as well as complying with the latest regulations.

In an attempt to raise much needed funds, the charity is calling on local businesses to give their backing to Parkalgar Honda rider Eugene Laverty, favourite to win the 2010 World Supersport championship, and his teammate Miguel Praia.

Businesses are being encouraged to pledge every point that the team picks up in 2010, with Southport based claims handling specialist Plantec Holdings, the first to sign-up, committing £10 per point for every Championship point the team scores in 2010.

“If Eugene wins the Championship and Miguel gets into the top 10 then they could score around 250 - 300 points which means we will be donating around £3000 to SUAG at the end of the race season,” said Plantec Holdings MD Lee Evans. “It only takes nine other businesses to commit the same and some public support and SUAG will hit its much needed target.”

By teaming up with the World Supersport Championship title favourite team Parkalgar Honda, SUAG will be advertised to hundreds of thousands of potential contributors throughout 2010. Rider Eugene Laverty won the opening round of the Championship at Phillip Island in Australia last weekend and his team mate Miguel Praia finished ninth, already earning the team 32 points this season.

“Spinal injuries are very common with motorcyclists and racing so I am happy to be supporting SUAG; anything to help people and their families with spinal injuries is a good thing in my book,” said Laverty.

Racing over 13-rounds against the best riders in the world, donations or pledges can be taken at any time through the year and the plan is for title favourite Eugene Laverty to visit Southport in the summer to meet SUAG and its corporate sponsors and then end up at a bikers’ meeting point.

To pledge support to the fund raising drive call SUAG on 01519-292535 or 01695-558455. E-mail SUAG on vjp24@hotmail.co.uk or alan.bridge41@btinternet.com.

The total amount raised will be published at the end of October when the race season finishes.
