Stoner eases to Silverstone success

Casey Stoner leapt to the top of the MotoGP rider’s standings with another processional victory at in the British Grand Prix.

Starting from pole, the Repsol Honda rider had a lonely race at Silverstone and was rarely troubled, with victory practically assured by Jorge Lorenzo’s crash with just 12 laps remaining.

Stoner was also aided by the retirement of Marco Simoncelli, who crashed out of the race at the half-way stage although in truth, the torrential conditions failed to inject any life into a largely uneventful Grand Prix.

Stoner’s Honda teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, finished in second place, a massive 15.159 seconds behind the race winner, with Tech 3 rider Colin Edwards claiming third place and his first podium since the 2009 British Grand Prix at Donington.

It was a bad day for the Yamaha Factory team, with Lorenzo’s crash coming just moments after Ben Spies also saw his race ended prematurely in a seventh lap crash.

Nicky Hayden and Alvaro Bautista completed the top five with Valentino Rossi finishing sixth on his first outing at Silverstone, after starting on the back row of the grid.
