Stoner triumphs at Indianapolis

Casey Stoner swapped his pole position for victory at Indianapolis today, to score his first podium finish at the American circuit.

Despite scoring pole position after yesterday’s qualifying hour Stoner lost out at the start of today’s race to his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa held the advantage for much of the opening stage, however as Stoner closed in he was unable to hold off the Australian.

As Stoner romped into the distance Pedrosa slotted into second place, which he held until the chequered flag fell. After starting second on the grid Ben Spies briefly fell backwards before clawing his way back to the final podium position.

After a brief spell in second place in the early phase Jorge Lorenzo dropped to fourth, where he stayed until the end of the race. Narrowly behind Andrea Dovizioso swept towards fifth place, ahead of a solitary Alvaro Bautista in sixth place.

Colin Edwards entertained the American fans with a seventh place finish, whilst eighth place was awarded to Randy De Puniet with Hiroshi Aoyama inches behind in ninth. Valentino Rossi fought through further drama to round out the top ten positions, as Cal Crutchlow held his eleventh place start.

Marco Simoncelli, Toni Elias and Nicky Hayden battled through the take the final finishing positions in twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth. A number of retirements included Hector Barbera, who impacted with the final corner whilst running in eighth place.

Stoner’s lead in the championship standings now stands at 44 points ahead of Lorenzo, as the end of the season weaves into sight. The next round takes place at next weekend (4th September) at the San Marino circuit.
