The 2009 TT will feature the first ever zero-emissions event.
More than ten teams have already entered into the first ever zero-emissions race at this year’s Isle of Man TT, according to organisers.
The TTXGP will become the first ever “green” race when it gets underway on June 12, which will see riders onboard the world’s fastest road-legal electric motorcycle.
The TTX01, developed with UK government support, is capable of reaching speeds of 120mph with zero emissions and event organiser Azhar Hussain believes that he will have a strong line-up on the starting grid, with a number of UK and international teams already confirmed.
“We already have more than 10 confirmed participating teams, including teams from the USA and Germany,” Hussain told Isle of Man Today.
“There is still plenty of time for teams to enter before January 31 and riders to enter before the March 31 closing date for registration.”
He added: “Leading UK engineering faculty Kingston University has also confirmed its place. The students were one of the first teams to come on board and have spent the winter months developing their prototype.”
The local economy, which already benefits greatly from the TT, is also set to benefit from the profile of the inaugural event.
“The Isle of Man is already seeing the benefits of holding the world’s first TTXGP with the profile that it brings,” added Tourism and Leisure Minister Martyn Quayle.
“It is giving us a real chance to put the Island at the forefront of technical development and innovation. There is a real buzz around some of the teams which have confirmed they will take part and this will only grow as we get closer to the race.”
Mr Quayle reiterated his believed the event, which the Manx Government has funded to the tune of £100,000, would complement the TT and would attract extra visitors to the Island.
