Top 10 Bike Insurance Saving Tips
Even we here at the UK favourite motorcycle specialist recognise that bike insurance is not one of those things you enjoying buying. It’s almost as if the phrase “necessary evil” was created solely with it in mind. Necessary it might be but paying too much for it isn’t. There are a number of ways you can cut the cost of your motorcycle insurance without reducing the protection you enjoy.
We’ve compiled ten top tips to help you cut costs without cutting corners on your next bike insurance policy.
1. Train To Gain Recognised advanced training qualifications can earn you discounts – Carole Nash offers up to 12.5% off. Qualifying courses include Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA), Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) or police approved advanced riding programmes.
2. Are You Experienced? The old adage ‘there’s no substitute for experience’ is particularly true when it comes to insurance. Research by Carole Nash shows that riders with zero no claims bonus (NCB) were found to be over six times more likely to have an accident than those with 5+ years’ NCB. A claim free riding record can earn you a NCB of up to 62%. It’s also worth protecting any NCB you’ve accrued. Finally, if you’ve been off two wheels for a while and are deterred from returning because you’ve lost your bonus then ask about our NCB Accelerator scheme – it could give you a discount of up to 27%.
3. Security Guard Protect your bike with a Thatcham-approved alarm, immobiliser and/or ground anchor and you can save up to 12.5% or even 15% for a combination of devices. Keeping your machine in a locked garage can also earn discounts.
4. Ride On Hanging up your leathers for just a couple of summers can be costly. If you don’t ride for two years you can lose up to 62% in no claims bonus.
5. Special Delivery A motorcycle insurance specialist has far better knowledge of your needs than a general insurance broker who is more familiar with Astras than Aprilias. This means they can often deliver better cover, service and cost.
6. Miles Apart We know it can be hard but if you do manage to ride under 5,000 miles a year your insurer may discount your premium.
7. Be Excessive! If you’re willing to take the risk it may be possible to increase your excess (the amount you must pay towards settling a claim) in return for a reduced premium. For example, Carole Nash offers a policy providing a discount of 22.5% in return for a £300 voluntary excess.
8. Classic Rocks! If you’re thinking of buying a used bike consider its age. A bike that is 10 years old or more can be covered under a Carole Nash Modern Classic and cut as much as 26% off your premium.
9. Cover yourself When comparing quotes check what’s included and what’s not. For example, if you need to buy breakdown and accident recovery insurance or motorcycle legal protection cover separately, it can cost you dear. That breakdown cover alone can cost over £100. Carole Nash includes these benefits, plus foreign travel entitlement, as standard with every road motorcycle policy.
10. Mod Cons Beware performance enhancing modifications which will bump up your premium. Not all mods will affect cost but you should let your insurer know if you tinker. The rule is simple -if in doubt give us a shout!
Don’t forget that Carole Nash also promises to beat any genuine like-for-like bike insurance quote (terms and conditions apply). For more information or to see how we can beat your next quote, call 0800 988 6982 and quote CNL4L.
