Two thirds baffled by road signs

Two thirds of motorists on Britain’s roads have admitted to being bemused by basic road signs, a survey has found.

Two in every three motorists in Britain are confused by sign’s on a daily basis, according to the study, whilst one third of those surveyed admitted to so bemused they simply follow the car in front when they are not sure what to do.

The survey, conducted by oil company Castrol, found that one in 20 admitted to never taking notice of highway signposts.

The survey also concluded that 3% of accidents on Britain’s roads could be attributed to a driver not understanding a road sign or marking.

Since taking their driving theory test, over half of individuals have not looked at the Highway Code and the same number could not identify a ‘give way’ sign when shown the image.

When shown ‘give way’ road markings, half did not know what it meant and one in 20 even believed it meant they should wind their window down and listen for approaching vehicles.

A third believed the ‘no motor vehicles allowed’ sign meant the complete opposite – that only cars and motorbikes were allowed and more than half thought the ‘no waiting’ sign meant ‘no entry’ or ‘no parking’. One in three believed diversion signs were not applicable to cars, and were instead for truck drivers only.

Disturbingly, one in four British people believe the ‘end of 30mph speed limit’ means they are not allowed to dip below 30mph.
