Valentino Rossi rejects Checa’s challenge
Rumour had it that Valentino Rossi might have been making a surprise appearance as a World Superbike wildcard, but he’s ruled that out saying that the timing isn’t right.
The rumours came after current WSB leader, Carlos Checa, challenged Rossi to a duel at the Imola round back in September. Rossi would be free to take up the challenge, as the race is held between the MotoGP races, however, due to problems with his Ducati bike, he is using the time to get to grips with it instead.
However, he hasn’t ruled a future appearance out, adding that one day he would like to ride in a WSB race, but only if the race fell outside of the MotoGP schedule. Rossi had previously tried to secure a wildcard place at Qatar back in 2009, but he was turned down by Yamaha.
He said: “It is a good idea and I like it but it is always difficult for the calendar. In the past I was always very close to make a WSB race, especially in 2009. There was the race in Qatar but Yamaha said to me they have a new R1, so they don’t have a lot of money and they were not sure.
“I want to do it but I prefer out of the season. During the season it is too much and it looks like the result of Carlos and the Ducati that the bike is so fast. So why not in the future and because maybe we can have more fun than here.”
Although there have been discussions over the MotoGP and WSB seasons running at different times of the year, Rossi was also quick to dismiss this, adding: “I heard about this idea from two years ago but maybe it has some good and bad points. Maybe it is more difficult for WSB to be in the winter to find the right places to make the races. I want to try and make one race but if WSB is in the winter then I don’t make two championships, it is too much.”
