Work begins at Silverstone
The redevelopment of Silverstone in preparation for the British rounds of the MotoGP and World Superbikes championships have already gathered pace, with the ground and grandstands cleared in preparation for circuit modifications that will see a remodelled track, increased run-off areas and new grandstands.
After securing the British MotoGP from Donington last year, Silverstone embarked on a £5m redevelopment that would see the venue become more “bike friendly”, with the creation of a new “Arena” complex in the current infield being the centrepiece of the new track.
To date, 180,000 tonnes of earth have been moved around the circuit, of which 50,000 tonnes has already been used to elevate banks and improve spectator viewing areas.
After also securing the rights to Formula One in 2010 following the demise of Donington Park, work is well underway with the cameras already documenting the circuit’s progress:

Start / Finish line; gantry removed, Pits Straight grandstands removed, work on new run-off for motorcycle racing

Pits Straight (view from grid); pedestrian footbridge being removed, Pits Straight grandstands removed

Copse (view of Pits Straight); gantry and Pits Straight grandstands removed, pedestrian footbridge being removed

New Arena Complex; new circuit where Arena Complex meets National Straight

New Arena Complex; new run-off, where Arena Complex meets National Straight

Spectator viewing areas being improved at Becketts. Elevated viewing banks, on top of which a new grandstand will be erected

National Straight; the old bridge has been removed, improving sight lines down National Straight

Brooklands; new run-off areas for cars and bikes coming into the complex at greater speeds

Woodcote; new kerbs, suitable for bikes and cars, being laid around the circuit
