Argentina to return to MotoGP calendar
Argentina will return to the MotoGP calendar in 2013, with the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) confirming that the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit had agreed a three-year contract with championship promoter, Dorna Sports.
The Argentine Grand Prix, last run in Buenos Aires in 1999, will be part of the 2013 MotoGP championship season and will go ahead subject to the necessary renovations being carried out at the circuit in the Santiago del Estero province to bring it up to safety standards.
Kenny Roberts Jnr was the winner of the last MotoGP race in Argentina, beating Max Biaggi and Norick Abe to the chequered flag at the Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez
Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner attended the signing ceremony for the new deal along with the country’s Minister for Tourism, Enrique Meyer, and Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.
The Argentine round will be one of two new additions confirmed for 2013, with the Texas Grand Prix also confirmed at the new Circuit of the Americas in Austin.
The announcement comes a day after the MotoGP calendar was released for the 2012 season, which starts in Qatar on April 15. The British round will take place at Silverstone on June 17 and the season finale will take place on November 11 in Valencia.
