Biaggi on form with Misano double
Aprilia Alitalia rider Max Biaggi secured his second consecutive double victory, leading the way at Misano this afternoon.
As race one got underway, pole sitter Troy Corser held his advantage, heading the field for the majority of the opening race. Biaggi was eager to find a way passed the World Superbike veteran, however found it difficult to break through.
Biaggi’s opportunity finally came on lap seventeen, when his fired passed the BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider, inheriting the lead. Shortly afterwards, Spaniard Carlos Checa also worked his way passed Corser, and was soon harassing Biaggi for honours.
However, unable to out Biaggi off, Checa was forced to sit behind him for the final few laps, following him across the line. Corser was able to hold onto third, securing yet another strong finish for BMW, with Michel Fabrizio fourth at the chequered flag.
Sylvain Guintoli managed a strong showing to finish fifth, with Brit Leon Camier just behind in sixth. Noriyuki Haga progressed on his grid position to finish seventh, with more of the Brits in Leon Haslam, Shane Byrne and James Toseland improving on their starting positions to complete the top ten.
The second WSB outing of the day again saw Biaggi get the better of his rivals to again take to the top step of the podium. Edging out his rivals, Biaggi managed to lead the way to his fourth double victory of the 2010 season.
Whilst the Aprilia Alitalia rider broke away at the front, Haslam was determined not to lose too much ground in the title race, as he stormed through to a second place finish. Regardless of changing his bike and also his rear tyre, Haslam did his best to keep the points gap to his chief rival minimal.
Fabrizio was again on the pace, finishing in another top position as he completed the podium in third. Meanwhile, Brit Cal Crutchlow recovered from a race one retirement to finish in a pleasing fourth, just ahead of Checa in fifth.
The remaining five positions in the top ten saw Guintoli take the chequered flag in sixth, with Shane Byrne fighting through to seventh. Luca Scassa was another rider to enjoy a strong showing, riding through to eighth, with Haga ninth and Corser tenth.
Commenting on yet another double success story, Biaggi said: “In such a tough and well balanced championship, all of the victories are earned with hard work and sweat. In race 2, to be honest, maybe I rode… pushing the envelope a bit, maybe even risking too much. But on the other hand, without risk there is no gain! This race represents a crucial moment for us and for our season we are coming out with our heads held high. As always I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart: from the guys on the team to our supporters. Victories like this never happen by chance and these ones in particular are well deserved by a large family which works together toward a common goal.”
The next round of the WSB championship will take place at Brno, on the 10-11th July
