Biaggi says Spies can win WSB title
Max Biaggi has backed Yamaha’s Ben Spies to take the World Superbikes title in his rookie year but has warned the American about making a hasty switch to MotoGP.
The Aprilia rider believes that Spies, in his debut season in the World Superbike Championship, has what it takes to overtake Ducati’s Noriyuki Haga and become the first American to win the championship since Colin Edwards in 2002.
Spies has been in impressive form throughout the season in what was shaping up to be a two-horse race between him and Haga and the Texan has managed to close what was an 88-point gap after round six in South Africa to just seven points going into round eleven in Germany.
And Biaggi, who himself stands fifth in the championship after impressing in Aprilia’s first year in WSB, believes that the three-time AMA Superbike champion has what it takes to become world champion.
“On the prediction for this year in World Superbike I do not have any doubt at all. Spies has such speed and is so strong that I believe he will take the title this year,” Biaggi was reported by Visordown as claiming.
But the Italian, who himself had a stint in MotoGP before leaving premier class in 2005, has urged Spies not to make a hasty move to Grand Prix racing, despite being strongly linked with a move to Tech 3 Yamaha.
“There are a lot of stories about him leaving perhaps for a ride in MotoGP,” added Biaggi. “What I would say to him is to study very carefully the technical offers before making a decision to leave WSB. If he is to go to MotoGP then he should do that with the best conditions possible.”
