BMW remain in WSB as Xaus targets Germany return
BMW are to continue in the World Superbikes Championship despite yesterday’s announcement that they would be pulling out of Formula one in 2010.
BMW made the surprise announcement yesterday that they would not be entering into the 2010 Formula One championship due to what they described as “current developments in motorsport”. It’s believed that the decision was influenced by poor results since the German manufacturer’s entry into the championship in 2005 and a desire to cut costs.
That prompted fears that BMW may also suspend their World Superbike operation, despite only joining the championship at the start of the year but the manufacturer confirmed at a press conference in Munich that the decision would only affect Formula One and not any of its other motorsport operations, which also includes World Touring Cars.
So far this season, MotoGP has seen the withdrawal of Kawasaki and the Grupo Francisco Hernando satellite team whilst a number of teams have scaled back their World Superbike operations.
Meanwhile, Ruben Xaus is targeting a return to action at the Nurburgring after undergoing a successful operation following his crash at Brno last week.
Xaus was diagnosed with a broken right Femur at the circuit and underwent a successful operation in Barcelona where three screws were inserted into the broken bone.
“The operation went very well and I had three screws put into my femur and twenty-fours later they told me I could leave,” announced Xaus. “I want to thank Miquel Llobet and Miguel Sales for doing a great job and all the medical team for looking after me so well.
“At the moment I am on crutches, because I am not allowed to put any weight on my right leg, but I can sit down normally and get about OK. I can start swimming almost straightway and physiotherapy very soon. I am in no pain and I am really looking forward to getting fit and back on my bike again.”
