Camier delighted to sign-off with double

Leon Camier celebrated an “awesome” year with a double victory at Oulton Park on Sunday to bow out of the British Superbike Championship in style.

The BSB champion, who is expected to make the switch to World Superbikes in 2010, recorded his 18th and 19th win of what has been a truly dominant season for both him and Airwaves Yamaha in the triple header at Oulton Park on Sunday.

“It’s been an absolutely awesome year,” said the 23-year-old. “To end with a double-win is perfect. The GSE Racing team have done an incredible job all season. I’d like to say a special thanks to my Chief Engineer Frankie. He gave me such a great bike for the last race. I wasn’t sure if it was the right way to go, but he was so confident I couldn’t say no – it’s a good job I didn’t!”

Whilst speculation unsurprisingly surrounds the future of Camier, there remain questions over the future of GSE Racing, the company that runs the Airwaves Yamaha team, with suggestions that they may also leave BSB.

The team, who won all but three races this season, are looking for a new title sponsor following the loss of Wrigley’s Airwaves and some have suggested that the team could look to expand their operations overseas in order to boost their attractiveness to investors.

But those suggestions were at the back of team manager Colin Wright’s mind at Oulton Park yesterday after what has been a record-breaking season for the team.

“This season we have not only exceeded everyone’s expectations, we have yet again broken records,” he claimed. “Leon and James are the only two riders to have finished every race in the points (barring Leon’s exclusion at Cadwell). We have enjoyed numerous double race wins and double one two’s and I believe Leon’s points tally (549.5) is the most any rider has gained in a race season. We have also, with the help of Pirelli, come close to breaking lap records.

“The Airwaves Yamaha YZF-R1 and the team have performed outstandingly and I’m so grateful to all those who have made this season one of our best ever. I said it would be!”
