Camier on course for BSB record
Leon Camier could become a record breaker this weekend at Brand Hatch as he looks to take a giant step to secure the British Superbike Championship title.
Championship leader Camier will be within the British Superbikes Championship title with a clean sweep of victories at this weekend’s Brands Hatch triple header and the Airwaves Yamaha rider can also write his name into the record books, becoming the rider to win more races in a season than any other.
The 23-year-old, who has secured 11 race wins from 14 so far this season, could surpass the record of 13 wins set by Niall Mackenzie back in 1997.
The total already means that Camier has surpassed the number of wins recorded by last year’s champion and his former teammate Shane Byrne, who notched up ten victories, eight of which came in the first 11 races of 2008.
And if the man from Ashford secures at least a double victory to equal Mackenzie’s record, he will also equal the record for the number of double victories, also set by Mackenzie in the same year. At present, Camier is equal on four doubles with Byrne, set in 2003, and 2005 champion Ryuichi Kiyonari.
A triple victory will see Camier extend his lead in the championship to at least 90.5 points with four rounds and nine races remaining.
