Camier secures Oulton double
Leon Camier secured a superb double at Oulton Park yesterday to jump to the front of the British Superbike championship.
Backing up from his win at Brand Hatch in round one, the Airwaves Yamaha rider was in outstanding form in Cheshire as he secured a pole position start and two race victories to leapfrog former MotoGP rider Sylvain Guintoli at the top of the rider’s championship.
The meeting produced a familiar looking podium in both races, with Hydrex Honda rider Karl Harris and Suzuki’s Guintoli taking second and third positions respectively.
Harris was on course to take a restarted race one but for Camier’s last ditch move to take the chequered flag on the final lap but there was little doubt about race two, with the pole sitter leading from the front to finish a more comfortable 7.326 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
“We really didn’t expect a double win today, it feels awesome,” he claimed after the securing maximum points. “We knew the Airwaves Yamaha would struggle being down on top speed, but it handled so well. The guys at GSE Racing have done such an amazing job this weekend. It hasn’t been easy for them so I must say a massive thank you and hope the result pays them back for all their hard work.”
Camier’s Yamaha teammate Stuart Easton was fifth, behind Stuart Easton, and fourth respectively whilst HM Plant Honda had a difficult weekend as Glen Richards could only secure sixth and fifth. Further down the field, fellow Australian Josh Brookes struggled after only being given clearance to enter the UK earlier in the week, finishing 10th in race one and failing to finish in race two.
