Camier smashes record with another win
After two sterling performances in the first two races of the BSB Championship from Brands Hatch this weekend, Leon Camier raced into the record books by claiming an unprecedented fourteenth win in one season, also grasping the 100th win for Team Manager, Colin Wright.
Having equalled the previous record of thirteen wins in one season, set in 1997 by Niall Mackenzie, in race two, Camier overcame a difficult start in the final race of the weekend to mark his place in the history books.
The 23 year-old failed to get the start he needed as the lights went out for the final time, as rival Broc Parkes stormed into Paddock Hill Bend first. Behind, Camier dropped to around tenth, meaning he was going to have a real fight on his hands if he wanted to make history.
As Parkes extended his lead at the front, Camier was forced to fight his way through the field, to ensure he staked his place in history; by lap five he was already up to second and planning his chase on Parkes, proving that hard work and determination really does pay off.
By lap fifteen, Camier had caught his rival; a mistake from the latter as the dup entered the Druids Hairpin left him running wide, which in turn allowed Camier to inherit the lead.
Behind, Camier’s Airwaves Yamaha teammate, James Ellison had previously been enjoying a third place run, however, he was soon demoted to fifth as Karl Muggeridge and Stuart Easton ntered their own fierce tussle for third.
Parkes’ Kawasaki World Superbike teammate, Sheridan Morais, had endured a tough weekend so far, with two crashes between Saturday’s qualifying session and race one later the same day. By the time of this third race he seemed to have found his footing, as he had fought through to be running in the top ten for much of the final outing, before eventually taking the chequered flag in eighth, having run wide at Surtees on the final tour.
As the race was nearing an end, John Laverty had worked his way through the fourth place, however a charging Muggeridge was determined to take his position away from him, really piling the pressure to the rear of his Buildbase Kawasaki. Despite his best efforts Muggeridge eventually finished just 0.057 seconds behind the Northern Irishman.
Julian Da Costa suffered a problem on the penultimate lap, bringing his first experience on the fantastic Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit to an abrupt end.
All in all, it was a perfect weekend for Camier, taking three wins from three starts, coupled together with setting a new record for most wins in a season. His championship lead has now been extended to 113.5 points, with four rounds still remaining.
Commenting on this outstanding feat, Camier said: “I just don’t know what to make of it, it’s an absolute dream come true, because everything just fell on one day. Getting the most wins is pretty amazing, and getting Colin’s 100th win. I just have to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s got me to where I am now from back in the early days. Fingers crossed we can keep it going and do the Championship and we have no bad luck.”
Gary Mason again took charge of the Mirror.co.uk Cup, taking yet another win and extending his championship lead to 93.5 points. Commenting on his weekend, Gary said: “We made some alterations to the front, which sadly made it ten times worse so it was a case of riding for the points in the cup and bringing it home. Another twenty-five points, three out of three I can’t complain.”
