Checa on course to claim WSB crown

Carlos Checa could be crowned World Superbike champion this weekend, with the Althea Ducati rider needing to outscore Marco Melandri by just 26 points to clinch the title.

Checa currently sits 74 points ahead of Melandri with a maximum of 150 points still available, meaning that the Spaniard will win the title if he can extend that advantage to 100 points on Sunday.

The veteran rider, who won twice at Imola last season, is widely expected to end the season as champion although he has only managed to out-score Melandri by 26 points just twice this season, leaving him focused purely on securing a result at Imola rather than any title implications just yet.

“This is a track that we know well and where we’ve had some good results, especially last year of course,” he said. “We will need to see how the tyres behave on the new track surface that is the only unknown but I’m feeling very prepared for the weekend.

“We are looking to the championship of course but at the same time it’s important to concentrate on each individual race, doing our best and always giving 100 per cent. We’re feeling confident.”
