Corser captures historic pole
Troy Corser added to his alread impressive list of achievements this afternoon, by scoring pole position for tomorrow’s double header at Misano.
Not only did the World Superbike Veteran secure BMW’s very first WSB pole position, but he also recorded a new track best lap on his way to his Superpole win. His total number of WSB pole positions has now risen to 43, as his racing CV continues to expand.
Corser’s nearest rival throughout qualifying was current championship leader, Max Biaggi, with the Italian setting the second fastest time of the session. With two separate manufacturers secruing the two top spots on the grid, Michel Fabrizio made it even more interesting by riding his Ducati to a third place grid start. Cal Crutchlow made it a four way fight for the lead setting the fourth quickest time on his Yamaha.
Carlos Checa was unable to hassle to top few too much, only managing the fifth fastest time of the afternoon. However, heading the second row of the grid, he will have Sylvain Guintoli, Leon Haslam and Luca Scassa alongside to keep him company.
Noriyuki Haga will start tomorrow’s opening race from ninth and the grid, with Jakub Smrz next to him in tenth.
The majority of the British contingent appeared to be suffering, with James Toseland, Leon Camier, Shane Byrne and Jonathan Rea lining up between thirteenth and sixteenth places.
Commenting on his successful Superpole session, Corser said: “I don’t know who’s older, Max or me but here we are! I’m very happy with what we did today, it’s been a long time since I was on pole, but the team has put in a lot of work since Miller and this is a really good result. I am happy with the set-up of the bike, it’s easier to ride and it has a more balanced position. It was very hot this afternoon and the surface was a bit more slippery but it is the same for everybody. If we get a good start tomorrow I will go from the front and see what happens.”
