Corser slams new Superpole format
Troy Corser has criticised the new World Superbikes qualifying system, branding the reformed Superpole format as a “lottery”.
The WSB Superpole format was changed for the 2009 season, bringing it into line with the system currently used in Formula One. This year, the slowest riders are eliminated from qualifying over the course of three qualifying sessions before the top eight are put forward to compete in the Superpole session.
But Corser has criticised the changes, claiming that the new system is more a reflection on who has made the best tactical gambles rather than being an indication of who are the fastest riders.
“The current Superpole does not reflect who the fastest riders are – in my opinion – and I think it is a bit of a lottery,” said Corser.
In the opening two rounds of the season, Corser has had to guide his BMW through the trailing pack after qualifying in 17th at Phillip Island and 16th in Qatar a fortnight ago and the former Yamaha rider believes that the use of qualifying tyres are the biggest problem.
“At the moment, you have to make a gamble on when to use the two qualifying tyres, and personally I would be happy if all qualifying tyres were scrapped,” he added.
“That way, we’d all be more or less on the same rubber and I think the results would reflect the order of the quickest riders better.
“Starting from so far down the grid is never easy, especially this year when the championship is probably more competitive than it has ever been.”
