De Angelis signs Roberts Moto2 deal but Elias waits on Gresini sponsor
Alex de Angelis has been confirmed by Scot Racing’s as their second Moto2 rider for the inaugural championship in 2010.
The former Gresini Honda Moto2 rider will partner Italian Niccolo Canepa in 2010 in what undoubtedly the strongest line-up in the championship announced so far, with Scot Racing having a strong pedigree in the MotoGP support classes following their 250cc championship win in 2009.
And De Angelis is looking forward to the challenge ahead with a team that will offer him plenty of home comforts.
“Next year I will race with Scot Moto2 in a team structure that is practically all San Marinese,” he said.
“The headquarters of Cirano (Mularoni, Team Manager) is no more than 500 metres from my home and I worked with the chief mechanic (Pietro Caprara) in my last two seasons in 250cc. As a team base, it is very encouraging.”
De Angelis made it clear however that he is hoping for just the one season in Moto2, with a move back to MotoGP very much the ambition in 2011.
“The contract is only for one year because the aim is to return to MotoGP as soon as possible,” he added.
“We’ve been thinking of Alex de Angelis as a potential rider for our team for a long time,” added team manager Cirano Mularoni. “We will start in Moto2, an innovative class, having secured a World title and our team aspires to have the strongest rider line-up.”
Meanwhile De Angelis’ former Gresini teammate Toni Elias has revealed that he is still keen on a ride in Moto2 but is still waiting on the financial support for the Gresini project to materialise.
“I am very excited and eager,” ElĂas told MotoGP.com. “At the moment I have various offers that I am evaluating, and I expect to hear soon from Fausto Gresini, who is looking for a main sponsor for his Moto2 project. Next week things will be clearer, and since we’re in December I’d like to settle the issue and know which team I will be racing for in 2010.”
