Donington passes WSB inspection

Donington Park has finally been given the all-clear from the FIM and has been passed fit to host the European round of the World Superbike Championship on March 27.

The East Midland’s circuit, which has been restored following a botched redesign and development attempt in 2009, will host the European WSB round later this month after officials from the governing body were satisfied that the circuit’s restoration meets safety standards.

The circuit was left in a state of disrepair after following a failed attempt to attract Formula One racing to the circuit, with then leaseholder Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd going into administration after failing to attract investment for their development plans.

The running of the circuit was later taken over by the Wheatcroft family, who have restored the circuit to its former layout and attracted a number of key events back to the venue, including WSB, BTCC and BSB.

As well as restoring the circuit, improvements have been made for spectators, with redeveloped viewing areas at Redgate Corner and Hollywood sections of the circuit, a new infield section accessed by a tunnel at Esses, new toilet blocks, entrances and improved catering facilities.

“The whole team deserves appreciation for their hard work in getting to this point,” said Donington Park Racing chairman Kevin Wheatcroft.

“With the time lost due to bad weather over the winter, the major effort has had to focus on restoring and preparing the track itself to meet FIM regulations and bring World Superbikes back.

“We’re now working round the clock to have facilities ready in time for SBK.

“Fans will see many positive changes, although inevitably because of the earlier delays, some planned improvements will not be completed in time.

“I’d like to thank fans in advance for their ongoing patience and support of Donington and hope they are able to enjoy the experience of world-class racing on the revamped track.”
