Edwards claims Tech 3 are “closer than ever” to factory Yamaha
Colin Edwards believes that Tech 3 Yamaha has the package to win races in 2010, claiming that the gap between them and the factory Yamaha bikes is getting closer and closer.
MotoGP veteran Edwards believes that the times set in pre-season testing by both him and teammate Ben Spies proves that the satellite Yamaha team can cause an upset over the course of this season.
No satellite rider has won a Grand Prix since Toni Elias took the chequered flag in Portugal back in October 2006 but Edwards believes that new regulations on engine wear, which have prompted teams to peg back the performance of their engines in favour of reliability, plays into the hands of the satellite teams.
“Basically, this year probably would be the closest they’ve ever been,” said Edwards. “I’m not saying the bikes are exactly the same. But I think they’re a lot closer than they’ve ever been.
“When you look at the speed charts, we’re right there. Everybody’s running good. I think all 18 bikes are running within 4km/h or something like that. I think it’s a good thing.
“The six engines all year, I think it’s evened out the amount of power you can actually put out and keep the thing together.”
The Texan also claimed that he didn’t care whether it was him or teammate Spies that rewrote the history books
“I would love to say it’s going to be me,” he added. “But if Ben does it, I’m not going to be disappointed.”
