Gibernau to miss Losail test
Sete Gibernau will miss the final MotoGP test before the new season in Qatar next week due to a shoulder ligament problem, the Guinea Ecuatorial Team have confirmed.
The veteran rider aggravated an existing shoulder problem during the test in Malaysian a fortnight ago and will miss the night test at Losail in order to visit doctors in Barcelona, the team stated in a statement released at the weekend.
The Spaniard, who is making a return to MotoGP after two years away, underwent surgery before the start of the season on his left shoulder but “the accumulation of physical exertion at the recent MotoGP tests in Malaysia” as well as the rider’s “demanding training programme” have led to what was described as a “slight ligament tear” in his left shoulder.
The Losail test provides the final opportunity to prepare for the start of the new season, which opens at the same circuit on April 12, as well as the only opportunity for riders to adapt to riding under floodlights.
The injury is not expected to affect Gibernau’s participation in round one of the 2009 season.
