Haslam keeps title hopes alive
Leon Haslam has talked up his World Superbike title chances after successfully closing the gap on championship leader Max Biaggi.
Haslam, despite only picking up one podium from two races, benefitted from two relatively poor scores by Biaggi at Silverstone on Sunday to close the gap on the Alitalia Aprilia rider to 60 points with three rounds remaining.
Biaggi remains the hot favourite to pick up the title, with 60 points still being a commanding lead with six races to go, one of which will be in front of Biaggi’s home fans at Imola and Haslam knows that he has to put in six flawless performances to keep his hopes alive.
“We have closed the gap on Max and we got a couple of finishes at Silverstone but it could have been a lot better,” he said.
“I’ve narrowed the gap to 60 points and the main thing is that we keep plugging away. There are six races to go, so if I can make up 10 points a race, I should be all right!”
He added: “The last three rounds at Nurburgring, Imola and Magny-Cours are all circuits that I really like, so we’re going to get to work and see if we can grab some wins and keep the pressure on for the title.”
