Hero’s homecoming for Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo received a hero’s welcome in Majorca last night as he returned to the Balearic for the first time since claiming the MotoGP World Championship.

The Spaniard, who claimed the title in Sepang just over two weeks ago, returned to his homeland last night where huge crowds greeted him in the Majorcan capital, Palma.

Lorenzo was driven from the island’s main airport on the outskirts of Palma in an open carriage, escorted by hundreds of motorists, touring the main streets of the city and the rider. Lorenzo and his parents then took to the balcony of the Consolat Sea, the headquarters of the Balearic government, where a commemorative plaque was handed over.

Majorca based airline Air Europa, a personal sponsor of Lorenzo, also announced that one of their Boeing aircraft will be named “Lorenzo’s Land” in honour of his achievement.

“This is yours. We are already champions. I am proud to be a representative of Mallorca” exclaimed the emotional 23 year old motorcyclist, who ended by joined in with chants of ‘We Are The Champions’ sung enthusiastically by the thousands gathered.

Before continuing the party, the Fiat Yamaha rider held a small press conference in which he commented on his 2010 championship victory.

“I have achieved my dream and this title should be celebrated to the max,” he said, paying tribute to his fans, supporters and his parents; his father, Chicho, and mother, Maria.
