Japan GP confirmed for October 3

The FIM has confirmed that the rearranged Japanese Grand Prix will now take place on the weekend of October 1-3 after being postponed earlier this week.

The Japanese round will take place at the Twin Ring circuit in Motegi in round 14 of the MotoGP championship, one week ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix after being cancelled earlier this week due to the travel problems that have hit much of Northern Europe following the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull.

Whilst air space in the UK has since opened, Dorna took the decision earlier this week to postpone the event amid uncertainty over the volcano’s activity, avoiding the risk of teams either failing to reach Japan or being stuck in the Far East beyond this weekend.

A proposed date of October 3 to host the Grand Prix was put to the FIM, which was accepted last night.

The amended MotoGP schedule is as follows:

Round Date Grand Prix Circuit
1 April 11 Qatar Losail
2 May 2 Spain Jerez
3 May 23 France Le Mans
4 June 6 Italy Mugello
5 June 20 Great Britain Silverstone
6 June 26 Netherlands Assen
7 July 4 Catalunya Catalunya
8 July 18 Germany Sachsenring
9 July 25 USA Laguna Seca
10 August 15 Czech Republic Brno
11 August 29 Indianapolis Indianapolis Motor Speedway
12 September 5 San Marino Misano
13 September 19 Aragon Motorland Aragon
14 October 3 Japan Motegi Twin Ring
15 October 10 Malaysia Sepang
16 October 17 Australia Phillip Island
17 October 31 Portugal Estoril
18 November 7 Valencia Ricardo Tormo Valencia
