Laverty: I’ll knock Crutchlow down a peg
Eugene Laverty claims that he is planning to knock Cal Crutchlow “down a peg or two” as the World Supersport Championship race heads into the closing stages.
Irishman Laverty sits 22 points behind Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow, with the British rider looking on course to secure the World Supersport title in his first year since graduating from British Superbikes having won three out of the last four rounds.
But Parkalgar Honda rider Laverty, who has three race wins to his name already this season, is starting the mind games with three rounds remaining of the championship by putting the 23-year-old firmly in his sights.
“Imola is a very important round,” claimed Laverty. “We tested at the circuit in July and had the same pace as Crutchlow and now we need to beat him. It is time to knock Crutchlow down a peg and get back into the title fight for the last two rounds.”
Parkalgar team manager Simon Buckmaster was slightly less bullish but still signalled his determination to see his rider on the top step of the podium.
“We had a good test at Imola earlier in the year and Eugene was on the leading pace,” he added.
“We have been working hard on the Parkalgar Honda CBR600RR since then and have improved the package a bit more. We have full confidence in Eugene and we all need him to win the race.
