Lorenzo nearing full fitness after unexpected break

Jorge Lorenzo claimed that he is close to “100%” fitness after taking advantage of an unexpected week off ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez.

With the cancellation of the Japanese Grand Prix at the weekend due to the air travel disruption in Europe, Lorenzo was one of a handful of riders, including teammate Valentino Rossi, who had an unexpected week off to recover from minor injuries, with the Mallorcan still feeling some pain from the crash that kept him out of much of pre-season testing earlier this season.

The Yamaha rider took the time out to continue his rehabilitation and has claimed that he is close to full fitness ahead of this weekend.

“Thanks to the sudden change in the date of Motegi I have had more time to train,” Lorenzo told motogp.com. “This week I’ve been to the gym, have worked with the physiotherapist, and on Tuesday and Thursday I had two days of motocross and dirt track. This has helped me to see that I now have hardly any discomfort in my right hand when riding. I’m very confident because I’ll arrive at Jerez at almost 100%.”

And Lorenzo is hoping to claim his first premier class victory at Jerez after two previous wins in the 250 class.

“Jerez is a magical track for me, and I think it is for all the Spanish riders because it’s a circuit where the public really do feel very close to you,” he added. “It has always been quite good to me. I’ve had many pole positions and have won there on two occasions in 250cc, so I hope to be able to fight for the victory in MotoGP.”
