Lorenzo to put on a show for home fans
Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo is hoping that he can repay the support of his supporters by going one better than last year at this weekend’s Catalan Grand Prix.
Lorenzo takes a 47-point lead to Barcelona, just a short hop away from his home of Majorca, and is hoping to put on a performance at what he considers to be his “home” circuit, particularly after the thriller of 12 months ago.
The 23-year-old played his part in one of MotoGP’s classic races last season in an epic tussle with Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi, only to lose out on the final corner of the final lap to the Italian.
Rossi absence through injury has dashed the hopes that many Catalan fans would have had for a repeat performance but Lorenzo is still determined to put on a show in Montmeló this weekend.
“Montmeló is a very special track for me, it is the closest to Mallorca and I can feel the people supporting me,” he claimed. “Last year I lost at the final corner but now I will try to come back to the podium to celebrate with all my fans.
“We have a big gap in the standings and it gives us confidence and allows us to be calm, but the team will be working at the same level, I am sure.
“We still have twelve more races; double what we’ve already had! We should enjoy and then, after these three consecutive races, we have earned a little break – a week for a rest!”
