McCoy “shocked” at Triumph cut

Triumph World Supersport rider Garry McCoy has spoken of his “absolute shock” at being dropped from Triumph’s factory World Supersport entry, just 11 days after being confirmed as one of the team’s two riders for 2010.

McCoy was preparing for his third year with Triumph after a press statement issued on January 8 confirmed him and Brit Chaz Davies as the team’s rider pairing for 2010 but on Tuesday it was announced that McCoy would not be riding for the team- an announcement that came as a surprise to the Australian.

“I am absolutely shocked,” McCoy said in a statement on his personal website. “Shocked to say how this has ended, after all of last year’s achievements. This was going to be my third year with Triumph and amongst everything; it was going to be the greatest season for each and every person who has bet on Triumph’s project.

“I had found a home with Triumph and I have been fully investing myself since 2008 in the development of the bike.”

The decision has come so late that McCoy’s racing leathers are already in Portimao ahead of this weekend’s official test and even as late as January 15, he was performing racing obligations as a contracted rider. The last minute nature has also left him searching desperately for one of the few remaining seats in WSS.

“At this stage of the season the damage caused is incalculable and I am not talking about economic terms,” he added. “I am talking about one’s illusion, about goals in life, about achievements.

“I started racing in World Championship in 1992. My goal is as simple as keep on racing and entertaining all the fans that believe in my work.

“Despite the rumours that have been spread through various online sources about my economic requests, I invite whomever wants to get the correct information. My loyalty to Triumph will prevail.”

Triumph on the other hand has claimed that McCoy had left by mutual consent.

“I’m very sorry that Garry McCoy and my Team didn’t reach an agreement, and I thank him for his determination and expertise, and for the good results achieved in 2009,” said team manager Gianluca Rovelli. “I do wish Garry all the best for his career in the next future.”
