Melandri admits that he needs “miracle”
Marco Melandri has claimed that he “needs a miracle” if he is to get a credible result this weekend in Estoril, summing up a forgettable season for the WSB-bound Italian.
Melandri, who will join the Yamaha WSB team next season, has been left frustrated with his Gresini Honda which has seen him secure just two top six finishes this season and left him tenth in the rider’s standings – the second slowest Honda rider in the championship.
And Melandri’s frustration has come to the fore this weekend, suggesting that the team have yet to get to the bottom of his problems with the Gresini Honda.
“At Phillip Island we were dancing to the same old tune,” lamented the five-time MotoGP winner.
“I can’t get a feel for the bike so it’s hard for me to ride. It is a tough situation but I have not lost hope and at Estoril I will try again although I think we need a miracle. We’ll see but I would love to finish the season with a good result.”
Team Manager Fausto Gresini meanwhile insists that they still have faith in the Italian: “I am not happy with the current situation regarding Marco. Unfortunately over the course of the season he has had a lot of difficulties understanding this bike and adapting it to his riding style,” he continued.
“We have done everything possible to help him find a good feeling and we will continue to do so because we have always believed in his ability and we still believe in it now. I would be really happy if over these last two races he can pick up a good result and sign off from MotoGP at the top before taking on his next adventure in World Superbikes.”
