MotoGP track planned for Chile
Chile could be a new date on the MotoGP calendar after plans were unveiled for a new Hermann Tikke-designed track, 30km from Santiago.
Former world champion Kevin Schwantz attended the announcement of a proposed ‘Motorpark’ development, which would include a motocross circuit and 1.4km kart track and a main race track that would meet both Formula One and MotoGP standards.
The project is awaiting approval for a review on its Environmental Impact, which was submitted in December. Tilke’s representative, Christian Epp said that once construction commences the timeframe for completion is around 18 months.
In 2013, MotoGP will return to South America for the first time since 2004 with a Grand Prix at the Autódromo Termas de Río Honda in Argentina. Should Chile be successful in their application, it will be the second round for the South American continent.
