New Zealand Bids for World Superbike Event

New Zealand could host a World Superbikes race in 2010 after having a bid accepted in principle by WSB organisers.

New Zealand, which last hosted a round of the World Superbikes championship in 1992, has had a bid accepted for a WSB event for three years from 2010 provided that the competition organiser’s terms could be met.

The race would be held at the new Hampton Downs circuit in Waikato, between Auckland and Hamilton on the North West coast of North Island, due to be opened in 2008.

The circuit is graded as FIA Level 2 standard which means that it cannot host Formula One events but the venue would be suitable to host WSB racing, although minor alterations may be required to the track, which can be split into two separate circuits.

Circuit managers are also hoping to attract other high-profile events to the venue, including A1GP.

Motorcycling New Zealand president Sandra Perry was hopeful of the application.

“We have some huge ground work to do about sourcing investment to run the event,” she told RadioSport on Wednesday.

“Some minor track modifications need to be looked at,” she said.
