Pedrosa breaks collarbone in Motegi crash

Dani Pedrosa’s title chances appear to have ended after he broke his collarbone in three places in a crash during practice in Motegi.

The Repsol Honda rider, who sits 56 points behind championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, will miss the last three rounds of the season, suffered the injury five minutes into the practice session having completed just two laps of the circuit.

Scans later revealed a triple fracture in the 26-year-old’s collarbone, which could keep him out for the next three weeks.

“When he crashed he suffered a multiple fracture of the left collarbone, and that requires an operation to have the best chance of returning to racing as soon as possible,” said MotoGP medical director Michele Macchiagodena.

“But not for this race, of course.”

Such a lay-off would almost certainly hand the championship to Fiat Yamaha rival Jorge Lorenzo, with Pedrosa the only man who could have caught Lorenzo in the rider’s standings.
