Pedrosa to go under knife after Jerez GP

Dani Pedrosa will undergo surgery after the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez after the recurrence of a collarbone problem that saw him slip from first to third in Qatar.

Following medical tests in Spain, the Repsol Honda rider was diagnosed with intermittent compression of the subclavian artery, causing numbness and lack of strength in his left arm.

The problem stems from surgery on a collarbone injury back in October following a crash in practice at last season’s Japanese Grand Prix, in which a titanium plate was inserted to heal the injury.

Pedrosa was leading the Qatar Grand Prix in Doha until struggling with his left arm from mid-distance onwards, and looked devastated that the problem, which he first encountered in the final races of 2010, had returned.

And Pedrosa will now go under the knife again, with the plate and screws being removed in an attempt to relieve the compression pressure in his arm.

“It’s never nice to have an operation, but we’ve had a lot of time searching for an answer to the effects of this injury and I’m relaxed because I finally know what has happened,” said Pedrosa.

“Now, we are in Jerez and I want to concentrate on the race, working with my team in best possible way to prepare the Grand Prix. This race is special, the crowd is always there to give you an extra point and I hope it helps me, as always.

“I like the track, I’ve had always good results here and I face the weekend with an open mind, trying to do my best in my current condition”.
