Portimao: Who needs what to win the WSB and WSS championships
The final round of the World Superbike Championship takes place this weekend in Portimao, with the title race still very much in the balance.
Both Ben Spies and Noriyuki Haga will face off in Portugal with Haga taking a ten-point lead into the final round whilst Cal Crutchlow still has work to do if he is to clinch the World Supersport title ahead of Eugene Laverty.
It’s sure to be a thrilling finale to the season, with both championships still to be decided. All four rider’s will be looking for various combinations of results so here’s our guide to the final round of the 2009 Superbike and Supersport World Championships.
World Superbikes
As it stands:

Only Noriyuki Haga and Ben Spies can win the world championship with two races remaining.
Noriyuki Haga will win the World Championship if:
- He finishes ahead of Spies in both races.
- He scores a combined total of 41 points or more across the two races, irrespective of Spies’ results. This is equivalent to two finishes of first position or a victory combined with a finish of third place or higher.
- Spies fails to score in one race and Haga achieves either one finish of third place or higher or two finishes of eighth or higher.
- Both riders fail to score in both races.
Ben Spies will win the World Championship if:
- He wins both races, irrespective of Haga’s result.
- He wins both races and Haga finishes second in both races. In this instance, the pair will finish level on points and Spies will win by virtue of most race victories. Ahead of the final round, Spies has eleven race victories compared to Haga’s eight.
- The pair finish level on points through any combination of race results, by virtue of more race wins.
- Haga fails to score in one race and Spies scores 35 points or more across the two races. This is equivalent to a first place and finish of sixth or higher or a second and a finish of third place or higher across the two races.
- Haga fails to score in both races and Spies scores a combined total of 10 points or more across both races. This is equivalent to one finish of sixth or higher as well as a number of combinations across two races.
WSS
As it stands:

Only Cal Crutchlow and Eugene Laverty can win the world championship with one race remaining.
Cal Crutchlow will win the Championship if:
- He finishes ahead of Laverty.
- He scores six points or more, irrespective of Laverty’s result. This is equivalent to a finish of tenth or higher.
- Laverty finishes third or lower, even if Crutchlow fails to score.
- Laverty fails to score.
- Both riders fail to score.
- Both riders finish level on points through any combination of results. In this case, Crutchlow will win the championship by virtue of race wins. Ahead of the final round, Crutchlow has five race wins compared to Laverty’s three.
Eugene Laverty will win the Championship if:
- He wins and Crutchlow finishes in 11th place or lower.
- He finishes second or higher and Crutchlow fails to score.
