Rea cleared to race at Donington

Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea will be fit to race at Donington Park in two weeks time after doctors confirmed that he has not aggravated any existing injuries after racing at Phillip Island.

The Northern Irish rider endured a torrid time in Australia two weeks ago, with two pre-race testing crashes putting him in hospital, resulting a dislocated finger and a wrist injury.

Rea did race in the season opener, finishing 12th and fourth in the two races, but returned to Manchester this week to undergo tests in order to reveal the true extent of his injuries.

But doctors were satisfied with the 24-year-old’s condition and cleared him to race at the forthcoming European round at Donington Park later this month.

“I have seen my specialist in Manchester and he has given me the all clear and confirmed that there is no further damage to my repaired ligament in my left wrist,” said Rea. “I only have some soft tissue damage to the right wrist. That’s really good news and all I have to do now is work hard in rehab to regain full function.”

Rea also insisted that the difficulties of Australia have helped him to focus his efforts on the rest of the season, particularly the two home rounds at Donington and Silverstone.

“It was really hard in Australia; it drained me of everything. When I got home it hit me two or three days later,” he added. “Travelling home was a big effort and I also got sick at the end of last week, which knocked me out for a day. I think it was a mix of jet-lag and illness, but now I have got a spring in my step again.

“I should be close to full fitness in time for Donington, so I should have no pain like before. My dislocated left ring finger still does not have a full range of motion, but that is a minor detail
