Rea fit for Donington return

Jonathan Rea believes that he will be close to full fitness for this weekend’s World Superbikes round at Donington Park, following a difficult opening week in Australia.

The Northern Irishman had a nightmare start to the season at Phillip Island, breaking his wrist during a pre-season test just days before the opening race. Rea managed to compete in both races that weekend, finishing fourth and sixth but is confident that fitness won’t be an issue this weekend after being given the all-clear by medical staff to race.

“I am fine now, just the odd pain in my wrist and I have been training hard in preparation for Donington. I have picked myself up and I’m feeling good,” he claimed.

“It’s nice to be racing in the UK and it is only a short ferry journey and drive from home to get there.

“I am looking forward to seeing some friends and fans at the first of two British races this year.”

And the Castrol Honda rider declared himself happy to see Donington return to the world championship calendar.

He said: “I really like Donington, I’m glad it is back on the calendar, so I’m looking to start the weekend strongly and move on from there.

“The circuit has an unbelievable layout and the first three sweeping sections are brilliant.”

Rea is also hopeful he will be more competitive at Donington after his Castrol Honda team worked on improving his bike.

“To improve what’s already a great all-round package, the guys back at the workshop have found some things to get a little more out of the Fireblade since we got back so I’m hoping for a really good weekend,” he added.
