Rea tops morning testing times
Jonathan Rea was the fastest man on the track on the first day of testing in Portimao, posting a time of 1:44.055 in the opening session.
The Castrol Honda rider put in the fastest lap of the morning session but was chased down by privateer Jakub Smrz, who lapped just 0.058 seconds behind on his Effenbert Liberty Ducati.
Reigning champion Max Biaggi was third fastest on the Alitalia Aprilia, lapping at 1:44.384.
Tom Sykes was the next fastest Brit with the fifth fastest lap time on the Kawasaki, just behind Suzuki’s Michel Fabrizio.
Rea’s Honda teammate, Ruben Xaus, completed the top six with a time of 1:44.949 whilst Noriyuki Haga was the last rider to dip under the 1:45:00 benchmark on his PATA Aprilia.
James Toseland was 12th fastest on his satellite Aprilia whilst Yamaha’s Eugene Laverty was 14th fastest.
