Rossi surgery a success as Yamaha keep cool on replacement
Valentino Rossi underwent a successful second operation in Florence yesterday following his shin fracture in Mugello, having 15 stitches to close the wound in his leg.
The world champion is expected to be out for between two and three months with the injury after having four screws inserted his leg following the crash on Saturday in practice ahead of qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.
But doctors claimed that Monday’s operation, his second in three days, was a success and that the healing was better than expected.
“Today Valentino underwent another small operation to close the wound, which is looking good,” said Dr. Roberto Buzzi, head of Trauma at the CTO Careggi (Centro Traumatologico Ortopedico) in Florence. “We closed it with 15 stitches and our overall medical judgement is positive. We used a short general anaesthetic and when he woke up he was in good shape. The healing process of the injury is going well and as expected in Valentino’s condition.”
Meanwhile, the search is on for Rossi’s replacement, with MotoGP rules requiring the Fiat Yamaha team to call up a replacement for any rider who misses more than two rounds.
Tech 3 Yamaha riders Colin Edwards and Ben Spies are thought to be in the frame for the ride but Yamaha boss David Brivio has claimed that the team will not rush into a decision, claiming that Jorge Lorenzo will be the team’s only representative at Silverstone and Assen.
“We will miss the next couple of races because that is allowed,” claimed Brivio.
“If it were up to Yamaha to decide alone, we would not enlist anyone to take his place from now to the end of the championship
“If, as I think, Valentino stays out for longer [than two races] we have to find a replacement.
“It’s very strange to speak about Valentino’s replacement. But we will try to find the best solution we can.”
