Shakey sets his sights on 3rd BSB championship

It’s Showdown time once again and Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne says his bike is back to its best and has set his sights on claiming his third BSB title, despite trailing behind current leader, Tommy Hill.

As the BSB riders head to Donington Park this weekend, to determine the 2011 champion, Tommy Hill leads the pack with a small seven point advantage over former double champion Byrne.

This weekend’s event will host two of the seven races, which are vital for the riders who will try their best to outride each other for the title. After last the round’s races at Cadwell Park, the top six riders had their scores set to 500, plus any bonus points added in the form of podium credits. While Hill is ahead and looking to score his first BSB title, Byrne is ready to take him on and is aiming to close the seven point gap as soon as possible.

The HM Plant Honda rider said: “We tested a lot of new parts at Cadwell and we found something then that should make out life easier and there is no reason why we cannot have a Showdown doing what we did in the first part of the season which was winning races and taking podium places,”

Byrne is looking to equal his teammate, Ryuichi Kiyonari, who already has three BSB titles under his belt.

Hill might be in the lead, but he’s not getting too comfortable, saying: “It feels good to be leading going into the Showdown but this is racing and anything can happen, we know how fast things can change,”

“I am a racer and want to win races. We have to remain consistent as every point now is crucial.” he added.

The final top six riders for 2011 are:

Tommy Hill, Swan Yamaha – 529
Shane Byrne, HM Plant Honda – 522
John Hopkins, Samsung Crescent Suzuki – 518
Michael Laverty, Swan Yamaha – 510
Josh Brookes, Relentless Suzuki – 509
Ryuichi Kiyonari, HM Plant Honda – 508

Let the showdown begin!
