Silverstone GP penned in for June 12

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone has been scheduled for the 12th June in the provisional calendar released by the FIM today.

In a calendar with few changes, the most notable entry is the inclusion of a third Spanish round at Aragon as a round in its own right, having been a reserve circuit on the 2010 calendar.

The newly constructed Aragon Motorland circuit hosted its first MotoGP round two weeks ago after the Hungarian Grand Prix was postponed for the second consecutive year due to construction delays. The Hungarian round has been completely omitted from the 2011 provisional calendar, suggesting that Dorna Sports has finally lost patience with the construction of the Balatonring.

The season will start on March 20 with the traditional night race in Qatar, with the first European race in Jerez a fortnight later.

A proposal to run the two US based Grand Prix back-to-back as a cost cutting exercise have not transpired, with teams expected to fly from Laguna Seca on 24 July to the Czech Republic before flying back across the Atlantic to Indianapolis. Plans to run all MotoGP classes at Laguna Seca have also not come to fruition.

Two ‘fly-away’ rounds in Australia and Malaysia preclude the season finale, which takes place in Valencia on November 6.
