Silverstone pit complex passes inspection
This year’s AirAsia British Grand Prix will operate from the new ‘Silverstone Wing’ – the circuit’s state-of-the-art, multi-million pound new pit and paddock complex, in 2011.
After an inspection of the new building, garages, pit lane, paddock and facilities by Javier Alonso, Managing Director of MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports, and a representative of IRTA during a recent visit to Silverstone, the new facilities have been passed fit for this year’s British Grand Prix.
The spectacular new building, measuring 360 metres in length and 30 metres at its highest point, is central to Silverstone’s redevelopment programme and will see the pit, paddock and start/finish line move to the straight between Club Corner and Abbey. The new layout means that turn one will become the right hand turn at Abbey towards the new ‘Arena’ section, which debuted last year.
A number of new and re-positioned grandstands are also being built around the complex, offering prime views of the new start / finish straight, first corner, final corner and new pit lane entry and exit.
Following Dorna’s inspection of the new Pit and Paddock Complex, Javier Alonso said: “It is very impressive. MotoGP will be one of the first events to use the new building when we come to Silverstone in June and that is very exciting for everyone involved. The facilities for teams, riders, media, officials and spectators are world class – there are very few circuits on the MotoGP calendar that are able to offer facilities like these.”
Richard Phillips added, “With 41 new garages, a race control building, a new podium, media centre, hospitality and VIP spectator zones, The Silverstone Wing will provide a world class facility where all forms of motor sport can be celebrated in style. We are delighted that MotoGP will be one of the first events to use the new facility, signifying an exciting new era for Silverstone.”
