Smith close to new Aspar deal
Bradley Smith looks close to securing another season in the 125cc championship after Jorge Martínez revealed that his Aspar were putting the final touches to their 2010 plans.
Smith, who was expected to step up to the new Moto2 championship next season, is now due to sign a new deal with the Aprilia factory team to partner Nico Terol.
The Oxfordshire rider’s future was in doubt at one point, with the seats at the Mapfre Aspar team expected to go to 125cc champion and Smith’s teammate Julián Simón, but the 18-year-old now looks likely to have another stab at the 125 championship, having secured second place in the standings this season with one race remaining.
Terol, currently third in the championship, has signed a deal with Aspar for 2010 and Smith’s new contract is expected to be announced next weekend at the final Grand Prix of the season in Valencia.
“We are getting close to finalising things with Bradley Smith and we have confirmed with Nico Terol,” Martínez told the MotoGP website. “So I hope to continue with the same high level of competitiveness with our 125cc team and fight for the title again.”
