Sofuoglu breaks ankle in training accident

Former World Supersport champion Kenan Sofioglu has broken his ankle in a motocross accident and faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the new World Supersport season.

The Ten Kate Honda rider broke his left ankle during a training accident in Turkey at the weekend and faces up to three months in a plaster, although he will not undergo surgery.

“I do motocross three to four days a week during the winter to stay fit,” the 25-year old told Turkish website ajansspor.com. “But during training [on Sunday] my ankle twisted around. I felt something was broken so I went to hospital.

“Doctors have told me to keep my foot in plaster for three months. They did not see the need for surgery. The natural way will be the fastest.

“I would still like to take part in the official tests [the first of 2010 is at Portimao on January 22-24]. I’ll see what the doctors say in three weeks’ time.

“I’ve told my team manager the unfortunate news.

“Before the 2007 season I broke my wrist and was still champion. I hope for the same outcome this year,” he added.

Sofioglu returned to WSS last season after a brief stint in WSB, only to miss out on the championship to Cal Crutchlow – Ten Kate Honda’s first defeat in the 600cc class since 2001.
