Spanish press hails the new King

The Spanish press has been quick to pile the praise on Jorge Lorenzo after his World Championship win yesterday, claiming that the Majorcan has dethroned arch rival Valentino Rossi.

The media also threw praise towards Moto2 champion Toni Elias, on what was a perfect weekend for Spanish motorcycle racing.

Madrid based sports newspaper Marca claimed proclaimed Lorenzo as “the new king of motorcycling” whilst it’s rival publication AS claimed that both Lorenzo and Moto2 champion Toni Elias were “Kings of the World”.

AS went on to claim that, whilst Rossi was quick to highlight his 46th race victory, that “now it is Lorenzo who occupies the throne of the premier class” and that he “will remain forever in the annals of history as the first Spanish champion who won MotoGP”.

Diario de Mallorca ran with the headline “This is only the Beginning”, claiming that “surely the cry of joy” inside his helmet as he crossed the line “had more decibels than the deafening noise of the M1.” The same paper claimed that Lorenzo’s title was proof of his new found maturity as a racer, claiming that “champions are governed not only by his boundless talent, but his head,” and added that Lorenzo “has gone through all the steps that must be passed, without shortcuts, so what has been earned on his motorcycle is caused simply by his work.” Their correspondent signed off with “Majorca is an island that does not even hold circuit for testing but can boast since yesterday to have a world champion”.

Catalan paper Diaride Girona claimed that Lorenzo’s performance yesterday capped off a “spectacular year” and saved special praise for Elias, claiming that “perseverance and effort have made the Catalan rider world champion motorcycle Moto2″ after the disappointment of losing his ride in MotoGP last season.

Barcelona based paper el Periodico claimed that Lorenzo and Elias’s successes were “A day of Glory for Motorcycles”, adding that Lorenzo put in a “ten out of ten” performance.

Meanwhile, over in Italy, sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that, whilst Lorenzo was the new champion, Valentino Rossi “stole the scene” with his 46th MotoGP victory.

The paper did however admit that Rossi would have known that “something significant” happened in Sepang, adding “for the first time in recent years, a team mate beat him at the end of the season.”

La Gazzetta added that Lorenzo has the potential that would make it “inevitable” that he would be compared with Rossi and that fans would be “looking forward to the next season, with the two phenomena in the saddle of Yamaha and Ducati”.
