Spies and Haga ignite Magny Cours
Ben Spies and Noriyuki Haga set Magny Cours alight in the duet of World Superbike races today, each seizing one victory to enhance both championship charges.
Having started on pole position, after securing yet another Superpole triumph yesterday, equally his best of ten in one season, Spies fought hard to secure the first win of the day for the WSB machines. Depsite the best efforts of main opponent, Haga, Spies was able to fight hard, yet fair, to ride to his thirteenth win of the season, much to the elation of himself and his team.
Biaggi crossed the line third, while Michel Fabrizio was fourth Leo Haslam fifth after a strong showing fro the Brit. The remainder of the top ten was completed with Carlos Checa, Yukio Kagayama, Shane Byrne, Troy Corser and Jakub Smrz each showing their potential.
As the field headed into the second WSB race of the day the championship fire was still very much glowing, and it is still anyone’s guess as to who will diminish the glow.
Haga decided it was his turn at the top spot in the second outing, beating the rest of the field to the premium position. This time around, Haga was followed across the line by Max Biaggi, with Brit, and front row starter from a successful Superpole yesterday, Jonathan Rea third, whilst Spies could only manage fourth.
Haslam again enjoyed a definitive performance, grasping fifth, whilst Kagayama followed in sixth. Byrne again showed his pace in the top ten, followed by Karl Muggeridge, Checa, and WSB veteran, Corser.
Despite finishing a few positions behind chief rival this time out Spies is ten points adrift of Haga, with just the final round in Portimao remaining.
As seems to be the theme of many championships this season, the 2009 WSB series is set to go down to the wire, and everyone’s ready and waiting.
