Spies future still in doubt

The future of AMA rider Ben Spies should be finalised next weekend at the Indianapolis MotoGP, according to reports.

Spies, who will win his third consecutive AMA Superbike title with a finish of just 19th or higher at Laguna Seca – the venue for the AMA season climax on September 28, has been the subject of intense speculation over his short-term future with links being made to rides in both MotoGP and WSB for 2009.

Spies has made no secret of his desire to move to MotoGP having taken up a wildcard position for Suzuki at Donington Park and Laguna Seca and whilst Suzuki were thought to be the most likely destination for the American, speculation has linked Spies with a number of teams as well as WSB rides with Alstare Suzuki and Ducati Xerox.

Suzuki appeared to close the door on Spies by declaring their intention to retain existing riders Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi but Gresini Honda, Alice Ducati and JiR Honda are all thought to be keen.

“We are still in negotiations with numerous teams,” Doug Gonda, Spies’ manager, told Crash.net. “We should be able to announce a deal at Indy.”
