Stoner fastest in Friday practice

Casey Stoner dominated Friday’s free practice at Phillip Island today, posting a time of 1:30.475 in free practice.

Stoner, looking for a fifth consecutive victory at Phillip Island and the MotoGP world championship this weekend, was 0.269secs ahead of Jorge Lorenzo’s first session time, with Marco Simoncelli the only other rider able to get within one second of the Australian.

Despite crashes in both the morning and afternoon session, Simoncelli was one of few riders to improve his time in FP2, putting him second fastest in the afternoon, ahead of Lorenzo.

Colin Edwards was fourth fastest on the Tech 3 Yamaha, 1.005secs behind Stoner, with Ben Spies and Andrea Dovizioso making up the top six.

Stoner needs to outscore nearest rival Jorge Lorenzo by 10 points to clinch the title from the Spaniard on Sunday.
